On Wednesday evening myself and two of our coaches, Rilwan and Younus, were invited down to Chelsea’s Cobham training ground to visit the academy set up, have a tour of the facilitiesand to watch some coaching sessions, as well as have two short seminars about how the academy runs, how training sessions run and how their player recruitment is carried out.
So 1st of all we were given an introduction and welcome to the academy and its facilities, then we went over to watch the under 14’s train on the brand new 4G astro turf they have. We were given brief session plans so we could follow and see what the young players were working on. The session plan showed a few practices which were helpful for us to see what was being coached and enabled us to talk about what we can do to improve our own sessions. After watching the under 14’s train we then went across to watch the under 13’s train and was able to see a slightly different session being coached, it was a good way to see how coaches at the top academy coach and the difference in styles that they have and our coaches at AllStars have.
We then sat in a few short seminars about how the development centres are run and how they structure coaching sessions for the younger age groups (under 6 to under 8’s). This was a good chance for our coaches to get some ideas and give feed back to me on how we can help all the coaches at AllStars progress and how I as head coach can improve us as a club. Our last talk was on the recruitment of the older age groups and how clubs like ourselves can help/work alongside academies to move players moving forward and do the best we can.
All in all it was a good evening spent at the Chelsea academy and we all came away with some very good ideas about how we can improve ourselves as coaches and how we can make the experience better for all of our players we have at the club.
